Positive Attitude gets Results
The intensity which we train depends fully on our mindset. Having a positive mindset helps us push harder to train and gain better results. It is these results that keep the motivation flowing to keep us training hard and consistently. If we loose this motivation we tend to train with less effort and can eventually lead to giving up entirely. To prevent this from occurring it is important to have a focus and purpose to why we train. We need to have a goal to work towards. If your training is specific towards a sport, we need to be able to have a goal towards that sport. If you are a rugby league player for example your goal could be to make more line breaks per game. This can focus training towards building speed and strength in the legs. Your training has purpose and therefore keeps those positive thoughts to train hard. If you lift weights in the gym you also need to have a goal. Set up specific goals that can be achieved through lifting weights, e.g. “I want to weigh 85kg” or “I want to bench 120kg”. This way you have a focus to push towards, and when you’re progressing closer and closer towards your goal it’s a great feeling of self achievement!
Listening to music while training helps to keep enthused, especially if you’re training from home. Listening to songs that motivate you will help keep the intensity up. Listening to music also helps keep track of time, some people use a song as a countdown timer for particular exercises e.g. a 3min song for a boxing bag round. Either way music keeps the body and mind stimulated.
It is important to finish a training session and feel satisfied with what you have done. If you are training with no purpose and can’t wait for your training session to be over then you need to reassess what you are doing. Take a break and identify the goals you are chasing otherwise your at risk of burning out. Understand that keeping yourself fit and strong keeps your body healthy. Consistent exercise combined with healthy eating will add years to your life. Many people exercise purely for their health and well-being, this is their focus and goal.
Don’t forget to record your results. Keeping track of all your training keeps motivation to train harder. It is an excellent way to progress. Try and lift a little more than last time, try and run a bit faster or longer. It is such a great feeling knowing you are improving all the time. Even try recording all your sporting results. Record your wins/losses in a season. Are you performing better than last season? Even try writing notes on one thing to improve on every time you compete. We learn from our mistakes, and this is how we get better. Sometimes loosing is more beneficial than winning all the time. We should always continue to look for ways to improve ourselves. Knowing that we are a better athlete than we were yesterday is very inspiring!
